June 30th Saturday 2018

End of the month and for the business world it's the end of the year time to stock take and work out the profit and loss for this year...

Went to coffee this morning then I fixed a computer for a lady, her computer was not working it was a desktop computer, it was a easy fix I pressed hard on the power lead and it all worked out fine... I have seen that so many times over the years, it looks like it in but it's not....

After that Carol and I went out on the Opal Field with my metal detector

I was looking for old coins and the old copper buttons...

Carol took the pictures today, have a look at that sky it was just perfect all day...

Arr, what did I find some wire and a beer can, that's it I try again soon... Just Carol and I with a 100 plus Kangaroo's and the odd Emu... Plus one wild goat, don't trust the goat they are a bit crazy...

Then guess what another lady and another broken computer, full of red dust so it's fixed and working... I only had two computer job this year and both on the same day..

Tomorrow July, Susan happy she has her car back saying it is like new... Have fun in Yarrawonga this time in six months you be living in Canberra...

Have fun people...

June 29th Friday 2018

Winter is almost here I am told, I have news for you it is already here... 12c in White Cliffs today and a very cold wind from the East, but I did brave the cold and do some work...

I went back to working in the new store room, that's my bench at this end for me to work at when I need to do some light work I am working on the shelves on both side's of the room.

I was asked why not finish one job at a time, there is a very good reason for that you can only work with what you have. Here I am fitting out the the store room but it has no walls yet. You can buy nothing in White Cliffs at best we need to travel to Broken Hill or Mildura at best... Next week we are making a trip to Broken Hill for food it been a month. I get 8 sheets of Cement Sheet for the walls and fit them, the next trip into town I get another 8 and finish the job... If I put 16 sheets on the trailer at once I be overweight and the man in blue could write me a ticket.

So I go work on something else till I make the second trip into town a trip into town and back home is 600km's so you have to make each trip count...

Carol and the local ladies went to craft this morning I think it is more a case of chat and craft, then coffee and craft... A good size group the today...

Kylie and Troy went to Melbourne and back today, all good and every one seems happy... Albury to Melbourne return is a long way in a day...

Susan getting her car fixed a lady ran into her car in Yarrawonga a few weeks ago...

Almost the end of another month, tomorrow the last day of the month...

Coffee tomorrow at the Red Earth Cafe, all welcome...

You all have a great weekend, it will warm up soon...

Hello to Troy and Kylie, hope you had a good trip...

June 28th Thursday 2018

We started the day outside very cold and very wet in fact we never seen the sun till 1pm this afternoon then clouded went away and out came the sun and a blue sky...

The day was a good day to burn my big wooden real that way left to me, when the guy next door passed away around four years ago... He never came back and cleaned it up so I had to do it my self...

This very old wooden real was heavy around 600kg Frank a friend has a big 4wd and pulled it out the other day into a position where I could burn it....

It was just so dry the timber went up in a flash and burned for hours... I did not have to tip and fuel on the fire it just went up big time about 2pm...

By 5pm almost nothing left by morning it will be fine ash.... You can see the hot coles....

The Wooden Reel was had a heap of nails in the timber 1000s of them and a lot of metal bars I clean it up at the weekend after it all cools down....

The weather man saying 4c tonight and a max of 16c tomorrow Friday, we added about 70lt's of rain water to the tank so back to around 600lt's ....

Friends came over for coffee tonight so I am a bit late getting three dots up on the net..

All good fun...

June 27th Wednesday 2018

Went to the doctor again today and all good, my diabetes is back on track. I been on a tablet for 28yrs and they found it was causing liver cancer. We I am all good I could have told them that, but they did a heap of test and all good....

A really odd sunset tonight the sun at the back of the clouds sent a grey across the ground, last night 1.5mm rain they said 10 to 20mm rain but it never happen so now we have had 39mm for 2018... the wild life is in trouble...

We will be fine, its the wild life that needs water...

My daughter Susan works at Yarrawonga Airport and sent me a picture of the light planes at Yarrawonga...

In a few months the business where Susan works will move to Canberra and so will Susan... If you think it is cold in Yarrawonga wait till you get to Canberra.....

Later today it was back working on next month Art Festival getting the pictures ready for the old time display my project for the year...

And that was my day, 12c and cold here today but it is looking better for tomorrow morning. I still have a rubbish fire to burn just waiting for the wind to drop, maybe tomorrow morning...

Have fun people...

June 26th Tuesday 2018

Top today was 12.1c a good day to work inside the underground at 23c as for the weather man today may go down as his biggest stuff up this year, yesterday they said 1-5mm of rain, we got nothing, today they said a 90% change of 10-20mm of rain and so far we got nothing, maybe tonight you never know he may get lucky...

The first week in July is the White Cliffs Art Festival and as part of the festival a area has been set aside for "Rex and old time White Cliffs" yep that's my job for this year...

I been around Australia using email looking for old White Cliffs and a lot of people have sent me what I am looking for...

In the 1920s White Cliffs Hotel and sale day...

Camel train in White Cliffs 1860... there were more buildings in White Cliffs in the 1860 then there are now...

As it says the Exchange Hotel year is 1900...

Ladies Day in White Cliffs... 1875...

I have about 60 pictures for the Art Festival, some of the pictures came fro our Bernie in Howlong Vic...

So that was my day stay inside on the computer it was far to cold out side and do a full day on the old time display I have some great stuff to display...

You all have fun and let's hope the weather man right and we get rain we are still 37mm for all of 2018...

To all, You Have Fun...

June 25th Monday 2018

It was a cool day but nice in the sun today, all that is left at the top of the driveway now is some stumps that I need to burn our of the ground. We had two good size trees here but with almost no water they die while we were away of the summer. We cut down three trees yesterday and today.

The only living plant life are Salt Bush and I seen a sad sight today a Kangaroo saw me took two jump and fell over dead we have not had a good rain for years...

Time for a big clean up, this old wooden reel has to be burnt so we toss so rubbish fire wood on top of it and just need to wait for the right time to drop a match in the right place...

After working in the yard I started fitting out the new storeroom at the end of the hallway. We are planning a trip to Broken Hill in a week, for now I use what we have as you can see in the picture...

Water, they are saying rain tonight and tomorrow. We sure need it but they have been saying that for over a year, our small 1000lt rain water tank is sitting around 400lt's... We only use it for cooking and coffee but still use around 30lt's a week...
We do have mains water from the town but it's just ok, three years the government said here is 5m to fix the water at White Cliffs, three years later they have done nothing not a thing to fix the problem with the mains water in town...

One of our old locals had a bad turn and was fl owen to Broken Hill today by the Royal Flying Doctor Service around lunch time today, not good... So many of our old people have been in trouble this year, why, old age I guess...

Let's see if it rain tonight just a maybe..

Have Fun..

June 24th Sunday 2018

New Gas Bottle....

The support act at last night great show it was really good..

Part of the 60 strong crowd at Red Earth Cafe last night... And the bar was open as you can see on the right..

The main act last night at Red Earth Nick Barker from Melbourne, he was a class singer... Nick also sings in Sydney at the clubs..

Video 25sec of Nick Singing in White Cliffs last night... CLICK HERE

Today we had a big cleanup of the dead trees I was talking to Frank a local last night at Red Earth and today he came over with his chain saw and cleaned up my place he took the wood away for fire wood at his place.

Frank hard at it with his chain saw...

And Rex hard at it picking up after Frank, note the wonderful weather... Also in the picture note the big round wooden reel over the back well we are having a clean up... The person who owns the block next door when he built his big long shed that you see was going to clean up his mess. Bad new he passed away and we are now cleaning up.. No one wants the wooden reel, to many nails to cut up with a chain saw so I am going to burn it...

Why the dead tree's a very hot summer when we were away last year a top of 52c and no rain the trees just pass on to tree heaven...

Tomorrow back to work on the hallway I am building...

Good news Frank said he come up tomorrow and help me clean up where the trees are...

Have Fun....

Today I was quite sore this old man backed off working up a ladder and worked inside, we worked on a bit of paint work in the lounge room and moved the television and other things around...

Here are some pictures, all of the same room after we rearranged things...

We moved the TV over near the window to the outside. We never open the window it will let the heat in over summer and the cold in over winter this room is always 23c we have never turned the heater on for three years.

This room was dirt just three year's ago...

Need to install a power point on the right side wall (one day)...

The stairs down to our bedroom 7ft high and 7 steps....

Hope you like the room we did all the fine work today and it is looking good, we are very happy...

It ended up a full day working on the new hallway wow that's a big job on your own but I am getting there a day at a time...

Here are a heap of pictures I took late today...

...
The first part is the new storeroom I do a lot in here over the weekend..

....
It is sure a building site here this weekend a bit of mess for a week or two till I get the job done...

....
The timber work is about 90% completed we will get there this year.. We will be able to walk from the underground home to the new kitchen without getting wet (I hope) and we will have a new storeroom at the far end.

....
This will be the main way into the underground home (there is a second door on the other side.. We do not use it I build it as a another way out in case of fire...) There will be a little door out to the hot water service... A door at this end leading to the outside...

That was my day I received a new blood pressure meter today in the mail.. I try it out tomorrow the royal flying doctor service would like us all to have a meter on hand, we got ours now...

Coffee at Red Earth tomorrow morning and the big show at Red Earth tomorrow night...

Remember have fun...

June 20th Wednesday 2018

Bit of a mixed day today Carol went to the White Cliffs Art House and did some art for the Are Festival in July a lot of people are working on are for the July Festival... You have to be a local rate payer to enter this year which is good seen there is a $1000.00 for best art...

I worked on fixing my key the lock button was worn out so I fit it this morning, now working I worked on the new hallway... At one end of the hallway I have a storeroom a new storeroom I need to finish the room and move all my tools and equipment into the room from the new kitchen... Once it is empty I can get back inside the new kitchen and work there...

Friends Lenny and Marlene came back to White Cliffs last night from Western Australia they drove 3,300km's to get to there shack out on the Opal mine area, they are nice people around our age..

Lenny has a 40ft Opal mine beside his shack...

Out at their place I was thinking it may rain but not a drop, we have had 43mm this year...

An hour later it did look like rain but still nothing look at the ground you will see the Opal Mines people dreaming of Opal for the last 150yr's

The Mercedes sits on the Opal Fields here in White Cliffs more holes, there are 80,000 holes out here.

We are planning a trip into Broken Hill in two weeks for food and timber by the we will down to water and bread Carol tells me that will be our first trip to the supermarket in a month...

I plan to be back working in the hallway tomorrow and get a bit more done...

Have fun we will, I try find you a picture of the Opal Fields from the air... Maybe I can talk Tony into sending up his drone... Still heaps of Kangaroo's in the area....

June 19th Tuesday 2018

Online shopping, out here in White Cliffs it's a way of life we buy a lot online just thinking over the last three weeks apart from our online order from Woolworth's Broken Hill... which is always a very big order around one a month we ordered from Chemist Warehouse, Ink for our prints, safety glasses to ware. Computer USB memory stick. Printer paper and the list goes on.

Our friends Tony and Belinda are back from a week in Queensland...

Tonight we had a large number of Kangaroo's around maybe 300 or more.

The only green plant in town a saltbush, see the little Kangaroo eating (this little roo be about 6mth's old)

A bigger Kangaroo next to home tonight...

A Kangaroo crossing our driveway, I could hit a Kangaroo in my own driveway...

I wonder what that means yesterday we had maybe ten kangaroo's in town but tonight over 300, I counted 190 from our landing late today and then a heap more came so I gave up...

I put Carol Proton back together day we took it for a drive and all good, the fan now working fine.

Karl had a service in Albury today and there will be a service at White Cliffs in the month's to come RIP Karl..

June 18th Monday 2018

Start of a new week in White Cliffs, and last night it was 3.4c really cold and they say colder tonight... but what a great day just blue sky not a cloud to be seen and not a drop of rain to be seen...

Bernie from Howlong sent me some pictures...

The fishing report is no fish the bird sitting on the boat waiting for a handout...

Greetings Rex. we have had 125 mm rain here Howlong so far in 2018.  Slow soaking in dribs-and-drabs this week enough and  timely to put some moisture into the soil for the winter crop in this and Burrumbuttock Canola and winter sowing area. Only 2 weeks ago farmers were "ploughing dust" 5 kilometres from Howlong. (picture attached)

The Bathroom Laundry is all level next step is to work out the under floor piping that we need to install, Peter a local came over and gave me a hand to level the frame... We sure have a building site here right now with a lot of work going on...

Peter and his wife Brenda came over for a coffee this afternoon, so now we will work out the water flow...

Starting to get ready for the Art Festival in July, I get into it tomorrow....

I be back at in the morning, need to do something to keep warm...

Have fun they had big rain in Gippsland last night, Sue a good time to be in Queensland...

June 17th Sunday 2018

We had a very good day today it was cold 6c last night outside (still 23c inside) and the wind today was just as cold with a top of 15c... We went to the White Cliffs Hotel for Coffee with a big group of friends this morning ...

This Opal mine may look small but it is around 7ft x 5ft some are 6ft x 3ft and are around 30 to 40ft deep now you never walk backwards in White Cliffs there are 80,000 holes in the area.

A friends place a full Opal Miners Camp out on the Opal Field... Why live here it's free, yep no power (use solar) no water (pick it up in town) no rates, no rent.. They are all Opal Miners...

Some of the 80,000 holes...

More of them they range from 20ft to 100ft most are 30 to 40ft deep...

This is why no one drives a NEW car out here, bad roads and red dust, and heaps of it...

A full working mine out on the Opal Field, This is called a self tipper they dig the rock and load it in the tipper and it will lift it to the top as you can see in the picture above...

This is looking down the hole, I am told this one is 40ft to the bottom... They had a good find here last week a big Opal the size of a Tennis Ball around $25,000 to $35,000 Our friend mined 7yr's to find this big Opal...

Well that was our day, which we can sum up in one word, COLD.....

Hello to all in Queensland, 25c I am told that's not bad

June 16th Saturday 2018

Power all day and a phone cell all day things are looking up in White Cliffs, the power guys have all driven off out of town...

First stop today was the Red Earth Coffee shop, it is a nice looking shop real nice shop they have done a lot of work this year... Coffee still $4.00 cup..

I found a few holes in our driveway ay the end of the week, Kangaroo's are the problem they did holes like a dog my guess is looking for water.

So a good part of the afternoon was fixing 200m of our driveway I hope to do so more tomorrow...

I was working late tonight on the driveway and took this picture just before sunset from home if you look close you will see a little lamb running down the driveway... That picture may end up in the Art Festival in July...

Belinda and Tony are on there way home tonight from Queensland, Tony brother has been very sick so they mad a trip north...

Gee it was cold today I had to put a jumper on for the first time working outside...

People have sent me pictures over the last two weeks I try get then all up in the next few days...

Have a good weekend...

June 15th Friday 2018

_________________________________________________________

I am sorry about Three Dots tonight we have had a bad day in White Cliffs they turned the power off on the town at 8:30am the local tower used for "Phone and Internet" ran on battery for three hours then it cut out around 11am NO phone and no Internet...

Service has just returned and to top that off the coldest day this year 14c outside tops... Did nothing the last two day on the Hallway no power means no power tools...

We can only hope for a better weekend...

Coffee tomorrow at Red Earth Cafe and Opal Shop and they say a top of 14c, I know your most likely colder, I put on a jumper for the first time this year...

You all have fun....

I get Three Dots back running tomorrow...

June 14th Thursday 2018

We all lost a good friend last night

Karl Brunnenmyer

Turley Hill White Cliffs (ex Albury) passed away in the Albury Base Hospital,

he was down in Albury with family.

Karl was my good friend for over forty plus years.

The rock man may you rest in peace

His daughter said there will be a service in Albury and one held in White Cliffs.

Rex n Carol

Carl did so much for me in the 1990s he did a heap of work on this underground home, in the 90s Karl he built his seat up on top of our home is still there he build it in the mid 90s, just a great bloke...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Today we had no power from 8:30am to 3:30pm so we went for a 200km drive to Wilcannia and back had lunch, went to the Post Office, Chemist then back home.

We had lunch here at Mrs Barrett's Diner, great food at a good price it was cheaper than McDonald's and better food and coffee.

Outside it is a converted old home where Mrs Barrett lived 100yrs ago... Well done people... We will go back.

Out on the street as we were leaving a big group of campers pulled up so Mrs Barrett's was about to get really busy.

It's old and now closed the owner did car service in 1950s 1960 they also did Victa Mowers...

This is Wilcannia some old buildings, some great buildings, some shop open and many closed.

On the way home the only living thing is salt bush no grass and no feed to be seen...

It's just so dry out here the trees are just falling over in there million's, just no water to be seen.

No water if the tree is not dead it soon will be... It is like this for a 1000km's in the outback...

We had a good day out today there are some great buildings to be seen in Wilcannia, but they need water they need good water the Darling is about a foot deep and dirty to the point it looks like mud.. Mr Government this is 2018 get off your butt and do something about the water...

We are getting there, one last thing today Karl, he was a long time worker for Uncle Ben's in Wodonga...

Time to get back to work....

June 13th Wednesday 2018

I cannot say I had a great day first stop was the Flying Doctor at the White Cliffs Hospital where they looked in my diabetes and did a heap of test and to return in two weeks, to tell you the truth I do not feel an better...

I have a very old friend from White Cliffs in the Albury hospital right and he not doing so well... A good friend..

A picture sent to me today by Sue and David who live in Gippsland, having a holiday in Coolangatta, nice view Sue that be hard to take for a week or two... great stuff.... David have fun walking the streets...

My little granddaughter Joyce (I get her name right this time) cooking tea in Thurgoona, Joyce make sure mum takes notes it her turn tomorrow.... We score you a 10...

And tomorrow we have no power, from 8am to 4pm the power mob are doing something that will take all day. All we can do is go for a drive and Wilcannia sounds good it is 100km's south of here. Petrol in White Cliffs is 189.9c lt in Wilcannia they say 151.5 no power here, cheap fuel so why not go for a drive it's a 100km each way...

It is 45yrs ago today I went into National Service, (what a waste of time) ....

Hello to Doug, Bill in Queensland have fun guys...

Tomorrow another day ( but without power....)

June 12th Tuesday 2018 (will it be 30,000 hits tonight I think yes.)

A perfect Blue sky today in fact it was a perfect day in White Cliffs I worked outside to 3pm and felt a bit sore so I gave it up for today, not much will happen tomorrow as I have to see my doctor about my diabetes in the morning my readings of late have not been good. Thursday may be not much better "NO POWER" yes we have been told there will be no power in White Cliffs the Thursday. Maybe a good day to go for a drive out of town to somewhere...

Part of the steel beams are up in the hallway, did well today I was thinking I get one beam up but got all three up today.

I had these been for five years, they are very strong beams...

Later today I went and seen Dick a good friend and we talked for about an hour, that broken hay bale at the Sporting Club is still getting a hard time from the local wildlife seems a local broke open a hay bale for the wildlife on the White Cliffs Oval. You will not play football on the oval it dry and full of small sharp rocks, fall over on this oval and you will need the flying doctor service...

Where getting a bus in town, yep Rob a local has brought a bus that he plans to do tours of the local are, and trips to Wilcannia for dinner. Rod has some big plans for his bus in White Cliffs we will be happy to support him with weekends away from town...

I say tonight we will pass 30,000 hits, I started three dots just over 4 1/2 years ago when we came to White Cliffs full time... It was to keep family and friends up to date with what we are doing up in the outback, I never would have dreamed it would pass 30,000 hits but it has...

You all have fun and have a drink for all of us, 30,000 hits...

June 11th Monday 2018 (Queens Birthday Weekend)

Did a lot of building today, working on the hallway from the new kitchen to the underground home, soon you be able to walk from the kitchen to the underground with out going outside (I was going to say without getting wet, but we never seem to get rain.... The weather man is of no use at all a week ago it said 90% change of rain next it was 70% change of 5-10mm now today it is 30% of less than <1mm.... Useless is going to rain or not that the question...

We all new it was not going to rain today so I work my butt off on the hallway... This is looking East today..

What I did today, from the kitchen you wall down the hallway turn right and walk into the underground, yep a fixed window to let a bit of light in the hallway. Tomorrow I start on the roof rafters, they are made of metal...

A bit of a mess outside tonight a building site...

Stayed home all day today and worked outside...

Busy day but a quite day....

Three Dots will pass 30,000 hits in the next day or two, that's unreal 30,000....

June 10th Sunday 2018

We had a big coffee day, it started at the White Cliffs Motel for two hours then it was off to Red Earth Opal and Coffee Shop for the next hour...

Then after lunch as home, I started work on cutting timber that I plan to use in the new store room that I have built at the end of the hallway.

I show you this yesterday, down the bottom today I found a piece of wood yes petrified wood over 4,000,000yr's old this small bit of wood is older than man, before the ice age.

I try get it cut off at the base that will show the grain in the timber, petrified wood takes a minimum of 4,000,000yr's wonder what the Earth was like 4,000,000 years ago...

And the sky way before sunset today it was almost all cloud today...

June 9th Saturday 2018

Another day in White Cliffs, and to tell the truth I can hardly walk tonight I been working on making our walls outside safe. Safe for me to work around, more on that later...

About the end of this month we will pass 30,000 hits on the White Cliffs website that is 30,000 have logged on to read the Three Dots Website, I don't why but it happens week after week...

I have been planning next year Christmas Trip away that is 2018 - 2019... now I am starting to feel old....

There are so many Kangaroo's in White Cliffs there was a big round bail of hay on the oval at the sporting club, well it was round the Kangaroos have pulled it apart there are 15 roo's on the oval to day, food and 1mm of rain last night...

On the East Side here at home we have some big cliffs as you can see in the picture the rocks fall off and down they come some the size of a ten pin bowling ball. I went up top today and with a rake pulled rocks back or I pushed them over the cliff...

Here are some of the rocks I pushed over the side most around 5kg, if you got hit with one of these rocks it may well kill you...

They used to fall from the top and hit the ground like a gun shot so five years ago I covered the big cliff with Geo Fabric that Adrian (my brother) got for me it worked perfect. Today I went up top and removed all the loose rock as you can see in the picture above. Now I plan to add more Geo Fabric and cover the rest of the wall. What happen is the rain hits the wall washes the mud away and the rock fall. Stop the rain hitting the wall and all is good.

You can buy Geo Fabric on eBay Australia 1m wide a 50m roll around $55.00

Three other people in White Cliffs have come and had a look and done the same thing.. Get a wheel barrow fill it with cement and soaked the geo Fabric in the cement then drop it over the top as in the picture above...

After moving all the rock today I am having trouble walking just lifted to much weight.

Have fun coffee in the morning at the White Cliffs Hotel

June 8th Friday 2018

We did near to nothing today we had non stop rain from midday and at 7pm we have recorded only 0.4mm next to nothing, but the best in months.

Carol went out with the local ladies for craft and coffee...

We went and seen friends out on the Westfield Opal Mining Area today, no roads out here there are some 80,000 Old Opal Mines out here from 20ft deep to 100ft deep not a place for kids... And do not walk backwards...

One of the locals out on the mining area and she has a lot of friends out here...

Rain they said so early I got up on the rook with the air hose and cleaned the roof of poo Sheep, kangaroo, Goat, Emu and as you can see it is now nice and clean the water from up here runs in our water tank that we use.

As you can see no blue sky today just grey cloud. Midday the rain started and it is still raining a total of 0.4mm that add's up to a low 30lt's in the tank and that's about a weeks drinking water...

Then the power went out and it just came back on so I am very late tonight you all have a great weekend...

Coffee tomorrow...

June 7th Thursday 2018

Scott sent me today pictures and details on Lake Mulwala Yarrawonga Mulwala today great stuff.

The lake has almost no water...

The "Proud Mary III" sits on the bottom a long way from the water...

Lake Mulwala will be lowered by about 3.5 metres this winter to facilitate works around the lake foreshore and weed control.

Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) head of River Management, Andrew Reynolds, said locals and visitors to Lake Mulwala and Yarrawonga Weir might notice changes to water levels from the end of April.

The "Cumberoona" (ex Albury Wodonga) sit's on the dry lake bed waiting for water....

"We're undertaking this work in conjunction with Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) to improve infrastructure at the lake and to control invasive aquatic weed—we plan to have the lake back to its usual level in early August," Mr Reynolds said.

"Lake levels will start to fall slowly from 30 April by about 70cm until mid-May when the irrigation season ends.

"Once we are sure that irrigation water delivery to customers is finished for the year, we'll accelerate the draw down until Lake Mulwala is 3.5 metres lower than normal—a level we expect to hold until mid-July when refilling will start.

Only water left is the Murray River...

"The draw down will be managed in a way that poses minimal risk of impacting on available water resources in the coming season.

"I recognise that Lake Mulwala is important to the local community and that any significant change in the lake level may have social and economic effects," Mr Reynolds said.

"The lowering will expose the lake flats, which will be muddy, reducing amenity, access and the ability to launch boats from the boat ramps. People will still be able to boat and fish in the main river channel that runs through the lake but will need to launch their boats upstream.

"Along with GMW we have been talking with community members, council and tourism operators to try to minimise and limit disruptions."

GMW General Manager Customer Operations, Scott Barber, said that winter draw-down was important because it enabled structural works to be undertaken around the lake.

"We'll use this opportunity to upgrade the retaining wall along the Yarrawonga foreshore and look to assess and improve boat ramps if needed," Mr Barber said.

Lot's of trees in the lake but no water...

"The main reason for the winter draw-down is to control the extensive build-up of the highly invasive aquatic weed Egeria densa which can displace native submersed vegetation and impacts on the lakes' usage, making it harder to swim, fish, launch boats and water ski.

"We have listened and taken on-board community feedback about the build-up of the aquatic weed in the lake and suggestions of a draw down this year to reduce the weeds impact on recreational activities.

"Previous winter draw-downs have proved effective in controlling the waterweed which dies off as it dries out and when exposed to frost."

Last year GMW and the MDBA released the Waterweed Wipeouts app. The tool is designed to help the community better understand the management techniques used to control the invasive weed. Waterweed Wipeouts is free and available from the App Store and Google Play for Apple and Android phones and tablet devices.

In accordance with the longstanding Murray–Darling Basin Agreement, River Murray operations assets are owned by a 'Joint Venture' comprising of basin state and federal governments. The MDBA is tasked to operate the River Murray system on behalf of the Joint Venture. GMW is the state constructing authority responsible for managing and maintaining Lake Mulwala under the direction of the MDBA.
