Copy of an email sent to Carol and I, From Shayne and Bob who spent some time in White Cliffs....

Hi Rex.

Shayne and I hope you and Carol are well.

We are still calling Darwin home until May next year - when we plan to continue on Stage 2 of our adventure throughout Southern and Western Australia.

We are still both working for NT Govt departments. I am still thoroughly enjoying my job as the Maintenance Officer at a Darwin primary school. Never a dull day, and often many interesting and challenging projects for me to do. Our staff and students are most appreciative of my work - which is far more rewarding than the pay.

I do miss White Cliffs, especially opal fossicking. I also often think about the suspected meteorite impact crater that I was so fortunate to explore.

I do intend to return sometime one winter to do more fossicking and exploring. I often remind Shayne that my dream for the future would be to spend three months of the year at White Cliffs and make a real solid go at finding some opals, then having the opportunity to spend the other 9 months of the year travelling throughout Australia, including fossicking for gold (at Georgetown and Cape York Peninsula) and sapphires (at Inverell, NSW). One day I also hope to find some 'Darwin Glass' associated with a suspected meteorite impact crater near Queenstown in Tasmania.

https://www.appleisleprospector.com/darwin-glass/

Please pass on our warmest regards to Bill, Macca, Dick and Rusty, Honor, and Linda George. We have such fond memories of spending time in White Cliffs with you all, and feeling more than welcomed in your awesome community.

Cheers, Bob.

Thanks for the email... Enjoy Darwin...

You all have fun, hello to Faye and John in Wangaratta... Keep warm...

You all have fun this weekend....

July 26th Thursday 2018

Up early as the car was booked in at Broken Hill for a rego check and after a 300km drive we arrived at 10:28am Broken Hill time, we cut it a bit fine this trip... The 90min check I was thinking this going on a bit, then Dave said it needs a fine oil leak fixed in the power steering in the next few months apart from that the car in good condition... So I paid up my money and we are all good for the next 12mth's I get the oil leak fixed in the next month...

History Of Broken Hill

The fascinating history of Broken Hill NSW

Located close to the south-west border of Southern Australia sits an old, rural mining town. The history of Broken Hill NSW is an intriguing one. This amazing mining city in the far west of Outback New South Wales (NSW) was once referred to as the “Silver City”. It owes its founding to the discovery of a rich line of lode in the mid-1800’s.

Went to a History and Discovery of Broken Hill today...

The history of Broken Hill NSW began with the discovery of one of the world’s richest silver-lead-zinc ore-body mines in the “broken hills” of the Barrier Ranges by Charles Rasp in 1844.

Some of the other names that Broken Hill has been called include “Oasis of the West” and the “Capital of the Outback.”

Great Drawing of Broken Hill mines.

The original “broken hills,” where Rasp found the minerals and later was the site of the first mine, has since disappeared. Over time, that entire area of the Barrier Range was completely mined. Many new mines were developed in the 1920’s which was the reason that the history of Broken Hill NSW continued after the original discovery of lode. Since most of Broken Hill is quite far from a major water supply, original settlement here was virtually non-existent due to the remote location. After the mineral discoveries, minerals were transported from Broken Hill via the Silverton train, unlike most mining communities that used nearby waterways. Additionally, water itself was transported into Broken Hills for use in the mines by train. It wasn't until after World War II that a water pipeline was run to Broken Hill.

Mineral Origins

The area was originally referred to as Wilyama and the local Aboriginal population called this area the “Leaping Crest.” Broken Hill is divided into a northern and southern part by a railway. The center of Broken Hill is just north of a large mullock (mine waste material) heap which is one of the town’s distinguishing features.

The original ore-body found in the Broken Hill’s was unique in its “boomerang” shape with protruding parts from the mountain forming jagged rock. Early miners referred to this ore-body as the “line of lode.” Other minerals that have been found and mined in the Broken Hills include lead, which was mined in as late as 1992, and Cerussite. Many rocks and minerals have been found in the Broken Hills including Phyromorphite, Gypsum, Smithsonite, and Copper just to name a few.

Today’s Broken Hill NSW

Today, Broken Hill is still a very popular destination to view this amazing mining town. Additionally, due to the extensive daylight hours in this area of the world, Broken Hill was considered an excellent location for a solar plant. The construction of the Broken Hill Solar Plant was completed in 2015 and is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Some of the recent attractions that have built up around this once desolate mining town include, The Living Desert Reserve and several mineral and mining museums. The Living Desert Reserve is found in the Barrier Ranges and located just 9 kms from the City of Broken Hill. Providing walking trails, fitness trails, and a predator-proof surround fence to allow viewing of the beautiful outback, the Reserve includes a Sculpture Site that is often visited. The Sculpture Site majestically displays 12 sandstone sculptures in the open air display, each with their own, unique story.

In and around Broken Hill NSW there are many mines recently built or being built. In addition to mining ore, Broken Hill has busy gold, copper, and molybdenum mines. The history of Broken Hills NSW is the story of a mining town in the southern, rural Australian outback. It has employed many miners throughout its history and is still a major mining employer today.

Dead wild life: We came to Broken Hill via Wilcannia and the 200km section to Broken Hill was like a war zone I say this you could not find a km without a dead animal just 100s of them manly Kangaroo, emu, goat and a wild pig... We seen three car wrecks by the road side that had hit wild life...

Speed limit is 110km per hour from White Cliffs to Broken Hill...

All good tonight in Broken Hill, we paid two nights here and will head home Saturday...

Last night we had 18 locals at my birthday party at the White Cliffs Hotel and I had about six others drop in and say Happy Birthday...

You all have fun I take some pictures in Broken Hill tomorrow...

From Doug in Queensland:

Recovering from yesterday when the railway club hosted about 120 disabled students + their carers from the local Currimundi Special School. A really great day enjoyed by all in nice sunny weather. I’ll send you some photos when I transfer them to this computer. 6 trains in operation for about 4 hours. All organised by me, we have another Special School next month.

Doug send us some pictures and you did a great job, special schools need more people like you to help...

The new camera just in time for my birthday tomorrow looking forward to using it the camera has been given to me by Carol, Kylie, Scott and Susan... Thanks guy it will get a lot use...

This was taken by Carol from around 100m away.

How good is this from around 1/2km away my guess is we are to far away for them to see us... Near the council building....

I took this picture from home out in the bush in a area I have not seen this area before, at 20meg then zoomed up using the computer. Junk everywhere and really old junk at that, looking at the rust you say very old ....

And late the sunset the camera comes with a 146 page manual I need to do a lot of reading...

July 23rd Monday 2018

Can not say I had a good day, a broken tooth and a bad night, the best part was the Flying Doctor Dentist was in town (thank goodness) if it had to happen it was a good day to happen. They took a good part of the afternoon and I have a fat lip but all fixed... How that for good timing they come here three times a year...

Pikey who lives next door is building a machine to polish Opal, he asked me over to have a look... top job...

I know a few people will be interested in seeing this, Pikey was an Opal miner for many years... it's looking great...

Looking towards Queensland and we had a strong wind from the North all day.. a lot of dust in the air this morning...

Strong win I took a very short video from up on the front landing... Video Click Here

Time to stop I need a sleep have a big fat lip...

You all have fun (I will tomorrow)...

July 22nd Sunday 2018

Out of bed this morning and off to coffee at the White Cliffs Hotel, we had a very big group the 14 seater table was full... We were made feel welcome by the staff turning on the heater and fitting a big table cloth on the table.

Back home I cleaned up the shed looking good and it is all sorted.. job done but it took last friday all day and Saturday and Sunday afternoon Troy shed never looked better....

How do we spell our surname "Duncombe" well looking at the papers work Kylie found it has not all way been that way, the "E" and the end is missing we checked a number of Birth, Death and Marriage papers "No E"...

I was aware when (as above) Alfred Duncomb married Mary Anne Leckie the family name was "Leckie-Duncomb" but I was not aware of the missing "E"... Someone took the Leckie away and added a "E" I know my late brother John and Glenda did a lot of work on the Duncombe Family Tree... This year I am try to do my own Family Tree... So who are we "Rex Leckie-Duncomb" that stuff up the Tax Office... Just joking...

Susan had her Birthday on the weekend in Albury and they seem to have a lot of fun...

I been told we are going out to the White Cliffs Hotel Wednesday night you never know what the locals are up to...

I have no timber or cement sheet left to work on the kitchen so it was back to working on the caravan I have Monday to Wednesday so I try service it this week...

John in Wangaratta get better soon we all need you...

Have fun this week.....

July 21st Saturday 2018, Susan Birthday...

I am still cleaning up outside around Troy Shed that has taken me a lot longer than I planned... We are getting there...

I cleaned up around the shed on the out side I found some tiles I can use in the kitchen...

This shed is filled with cement inside and outside a year ago we had a big win 130kph the shed just took it no problems ...

It is only 2.7m x 2.7m and after the last two days it is really good inside, and now the outside clean as well... At last...

Otto took this picture last night and sent it to me this morning, He just know when to press the button thank you.

With a bit of luck I have the shed cleaned up tomorrow what we want to keep is back in the shed I have given a heap away to locals.. The trailer is full and ready for a trip to the tip..

Happy Birthday Susan, who is living in Yarrawonga, and after a trip to New Zealand end of next month she be moving to Canberra... Susan if you think Yarrawonga cold wait till next winter in Canberra... That is a super cold place to live....

Hope you all have a good time in Albury at your party...

Have fun in Albury....

July 20th Friday 2018
Max was 16c today and a cold night in town, but it ended up a good day when the sun warmed up.

That shed it is 90% sorted just have to do around the outside of the shed it a small shed 2.7 x 2.7m square metal shed Troy in Thurgoona gave me the shed. After we built the shed we laid cement around the outside and cement inside the cement holes the shed down...

All this came out of a small shed no wonder I could find nothing...

Then I started to fill it putting back about 1/2 what we took out..

Note the floor clean, we had trouble walking in the shed..

As I said we put about 50% back the rest of it I give it away ....

It took all day today I did nothing else still have a bit to sort out, the floor clean for now and there is room to walk around... Coffee in the morning then I take a trailer load to the tip, the rest I sell in the trailer down town...

Tomorrow I clean up the outside that a big mess...

Full days work, always something to do here...

You all have a great weekend, and make sure you have fun....

If I make any money from what is left over I give it to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, it may pay for a bolt in a plane.

Adrian and Dianne you have fun...

July 19th Thursday 2018

A very warm day in White Cliffs with 25c in the shade today well over 30c in the sun...

.. Remember this from yesterday and I asked what is it, well ask on three dots and someone will tell you.

Gday Rex.

Hollow steel balls like the one in your photo were used in the 1950's in parts of America to clear light forest trees. The ball was on a chain dragged between 2 tractors either side. The ball rolled [bounced] over stumps without snagging. You can see the turnbuckle on the ball in your photo which allowed the ball to fully spin. Usually there was a solid shaft that ran through the centre of the ball to both turnbuckles. As for your specimen, the big dents suggest it was used for pounding heavy rock. My guess is that it may have been used by a mining exploration group in early days of Queensland's minerals exploration... perhaps on a crane to smash rock outcrops. Would be interesting to know the exact location it was found. The cost of that ball....and carting it to the remote Qld Border area suggests it was for big enterprise venture.

.This photo comes from a South Australian scrub clearing webpage and I notice there is only one turnbuckle. Assumedly the ball would roll from side-to-side behind one tractor or bulldozer randomly lashing and down-felling trees which in this pic are spindly gums. It was called "high ball clearing" and the article cites a price of 2 Pounds 10 Shillings to have 1 acre cleared

From Bernie in Howlong.

Unreal Bernie I found about the balls on Google your so right...

I go see Cree and pass it on what it is as it is going in her garden....

.I starting doing the trim work in the kitchen as you can see in the picture... Had a visit from a friend today who was a builder all his life.. And he told me a lot of things about what to do in the kitchen that will make my life a bit easier... Thanks for the visit...

I am in a lot of trouble with timber (I have run out and there is nothing left to work with) We are off to Broken Hill this time next week....

The new stove in place as I said last night and it is working yep it is a 100% a going stove...

We have a long way to go and we will get back into it soon, tomorrow I am going to clean out Troy shed, Yep Kylie and Troy gave it to me a few years back and right now inside it is a real mess. Tomorrow I get everything our and then pack it back in... I know there are things in there I need...

So here we go another big clean up job, I do all these things while I have nothing to work with...

Found on Instagram:

Miss that new-car feeling? You can take your ride to a car wash and pay top dollar for detailing, but this quick fix saves you the cash. After washing and vacuuming your vehicle, make your tires and hubcaps sparkle with the help of baking soda.

Simply mix one-half cup baking soda, one tablespoon dish soap, and two cups warm water in a small bowl. Use a soft sponge or towel to wash and gently scrub the tires and hubcaps. Spray with water and your car is ready for road tripping.

I can tell you it works....

You all have fun the weekend is almost here...

Send us some rain 38mm this year a bit of a joke...

Have fun...

July 18th Wednesday 2018

We just returned from a town meeting and a review of the White Cliffs Art Festival and what we need to do for the next art festival in 2020 It looks like it will be moved from June (to cold) to August....

This tree is right above our Underground Home and that can be a problem in the years to come. What happen the trees grow up top of the underground homes and they drop tree roots deep in the ground. The tree dies and the tree's rot away we get rain and water runs down in the underground... We have to go up top and try find them...

Found north of town towards the Queensland border "what is it"????? it is made of 9mm steel and the weight of a car... It going to sit in a White Cliffs garden and I guess it be talked about for years...

The stove in the new kitchen is running it is in position and LP Gas hooked up and it looks good "Chef Stove" I think it is about the only LP stove you can now buy just under $600 that's one more job out of the way...

That was today, hope you had fun try Lotto last night no luck I try again tonight...

We are going into Broken Hill Thursday next week, car rego...

Have fun...

July 17th Tuesday 2018
That was a hard day working in the kitchen, I have a lot of work to do in there, and like today I do one thing at a time...

Took this picture last night it not a great picture but it best I could do with my Camera phone the Bright White was the moon and the blue shade is Venus almost side by side, as we all know the moon a lot closer to Earth that Venus so not quite side by side...

I need to give it a good clean Adrian and Dianne gave Carol and I the 1840 4ft round table for our new kitchen... We put it together today and sat it on a mat and later covered it with a old blanket...

This took up a good part of my day working out where the LP Gas Stove will tomorrow I put a whole in the wall outside a gas bottle, Remember it is all LP Gas up here...

As you can see it is a big kitchen it came from Hay NSW and cost me a $1 to buy now I need a lot of white paint. We we go into Broken Hill in two weeks I get what we need (the Mercedes Benz is due for a NSW rego check at the end of the month in Broken Hill.) We then have a big cost and a big job buying a timber floor and installing it in place...

It will look good when complete still have to hook up power and water... There is a hole in the kitchen for a dish washer and a mini bar refrigerator to keep my milk in for coffee... We have a large centre kitchen unit that matches the new kitchen....

This kitchen was in a display home in Wodonga, when it came time to sell the home a lady said she buy it if it had a timber kitchen. So the builder pulled this kitchen out and took it to a auction in Albury, never used we paid $300 at auction and shipped it to White Cliffs.... As I said it has a big center unit and breakfast bar that we will put in place after the timber floor is in place...

Bit late so that it for today, I came in after a full day work... and fell asleep in the chair that's why dots is so late my fault...

Urn thanks for all the help on how to install the gas stove, thank you... I did my training at the University Of White Cliffs...

July 16th Monday 2018

Very cold night (nothing like down South) but what a great day 21c sitting outside. We had a very strong wind from the North to North West all day.

The set of draws I restored are in the main bedroom that be handy for me...

Went for a walk down the bottom of the drive way this afternoon (our driveway is off to the left) the main road is right behind me... Have a look at that Blue Sky, it could be better RAIN....

This right on top of the hill the town water comes from the big tanks in the picture. Salt bush is all that is alive and as you can see not a blade of grass. The wild life are having a hard time there is nothing to drink and nothing to eat the wild life does not normally eat salt bush but there nothing else left...

The red circle is where I start each afternoon (five days a week) and I walk to the top of our place... I have a good size area up here with view to the East and a view to the West, this picture is looking North... I often think what can I do up here...

The only big tree we have up here is dead, dry ed out and blowen apart I put the word out in case someone needs fire wood.... That thing that looks like a roof to is a solar cell stand for the place next door...

... Kylie sent a picture of Joyce who had her first day without training wheel, I am told she will not ride till she has a helmet on... An that's a new bike.... They had a girls day shopping today Kylie, Joyce and Muffy...

Like I say most days Have Fun...

Hi Sue and David in Gippsland....

John in Wangaratta get well soon.....

July 15th Sunday 2018

Not a good day I have a good touch of the flu, and almost no sleep last night, not the way to get things done.. I did not go for coffee this morning and called in sick..

Around lunch time I felt better and did some work on my set of draws..

A few people told me you did not show your winning picture from the Art Festival last weekend, well here it is you have to remember the theme of weekend was time... Picture taken at the tip shop in Broken Hill, I felt some of my other pictures were better...

This is what I worked on the last two days, next door said it was fit for the tip, so I took it apart (now they want it back) it is not perfect a long way from it but it is all clean and ready to use... Total cost (Zero) I used what I had here at home...

........
We cut the dead trees down around the place a few weeks ago and last Monday I build a fire over one stump and it burned for five days and as you can see in the first picture it burn down below ground level. Two more to go I hope to set on on fire tomorrow if I feel ok...

Take a look at the sky just blue all day, not a great sunset and they are saying 1c tonight hope it will warm up tomorrow...

That's it from me I was better most of the day but after the sun went down I don't feel so good....

I am told we are rearranging our bedroom tomorrow..

A new working week tomorrow "Have Fun"

July 14th Saturday 2018

After a cold night outside 1c we had a great day by breakfast it was 15c we went to Coffee at Red Earth Cafe and the table was full then four more people turned up to make a group of 16 around the table...

The rock people seem to be growing but some are getting to close to the road, how would you like to hit a rock man at 50kph not good...

New top is on, we need to let the glue dry then I get to work over the week end with the sander...

I asked a good friend of mine Otto, he is a World Wide award winning photograph about cameras. I have looking at camera's for sometime, I can no longer buy the camera that I first looked at a Canon 540. Otto has a Canon 540 the new one they have is a 560hs but it's up $150 and 16mp selling for $470...

They also just added to their range a Canon 430 it is just over 20mp and 1100mm zoom lens.. That's one hell of a camera. I can buy it under $300.00

I am open to comment, what do you think.. CLICK HERE ...

The government just added 10% GST to all items... I don't understand what's going on, a camera was selling $340.00 now add 10% GST that's $34.00 or $374.00 the retail shops are selling it for $480.00 I think we are all being ripped off by the shops...

What we do in White Cliffs, the Flying Doctor Service rang me yesterday saying we have a doctor in training in the field of diabetes. Can you come in and see her (I am not sick) yes that's ok I go along... I had a full check up lasting two hours she will make a great doctor... And we have been invited to a coffee and cake in the morning at the hospital (tomorrow morning...) HaHa when you think about that...

All the art in this section are done by local people...

I did this wall a heap of pictures on the History of our town they are mine to keep at I paid and did all the work on this section... My project for the year in town and people love it.... The photo section was in this side room and my pictures won first prize in the "Photograph Section" I will put them on three dots in coming days.. Prize $50.00

The handing out of prizes last night...

And that's where it all went wrong the judge from Broken Hill gave the first prize to this, $1000.00 I am not going to say anymore I let you people decide...

Jenny a local did this door ( have a close look it's an old door) it was a winner in my eye's and everyone else, but got nothing not a thing in fact no locals received a prize it all went to craft projects from Broken Hill...

That door as you can see is outstanding and is "not for sale"....

The only prize given to a local was my $50.00 in the photograph section...

That's today now a re-run of yesterday...
