Rex Dunombe lay claim to be Australia first computer programmer in modern times 1963 for Macquarie Textiles - Albury NSW, writing in hexadecimal and pin tape.
It was used to work out gearing on textile machines. Maybe there was someone before 1963 but we know of no one programming in business before this date..

Saturday 31st August 2019

The ladies in town that are into art had a drawing class today at Eagle Nest some know it as Fort Eagle it's one on the first underground homes in White Cliffs and has a large room and lookout up top.

The room up the top was used today as a class room...

The road out to the East of White Cliffs it's a hard road on your car but people travel it every day...

A big group of people on top of the hill doing the drawing class today...

Almost right in the middle of the picture is our place on Smith Hill...

I went to Red Earth for coffee today with about ten people number were down due to the drawing class on the hill...

In the afternoon I got my first 12v light working in the under home yes it is running off Solar Power and the mains power light is still there in the lounge room but now turned off...

Scott in Canberra with his sister Susan who lives there....

. Susan car in now a ACT car and so is her licence, I blocked plate and licence out as it had her address on it...

We had a really good day installing the Underground light took a bit of time late today but all good now...

Have fun tomorrow it is Spring...

Friday 30th August 2019

And the talk around town is water well lack of water, it been like this the last few years in White Cliffs it is a big problem for the local people...

This is looking to the South from the roadway at the back of Smiths Hill where we live... No grass at all and even the Salt Bush is drying up and it early this year August...

They roads are falling apart at a really fast rate council is working hard to keep the roads but with no water there is not much they can do...

This is the North side of Smith's Hill and a bit more green, the wind has been blowing from the South of the Hill and as you see that side is really very dry.. The hot sun will dry out the North side over the next few months...

The lady of the house went to Craft this morning with a big group of local people, and there is more craft on tomorrow a big two days of craft in White Cliffs...

Two people asked me about the FACE in the picture below, gee you do miss much do you.. I take a picture tomorrow... And yes it is a face...

For safety I am putting the big battery under cover in a very open area I will cement the area to tidy it up. We will get cement in Broken Hill next week... Yep we planning a trip in maybe Tuesday or Wednesday...

If you are in Myer Albury this week talk to Adrian and Dianne who have a popup shop over the next few days...

Have fun tomorrow the last day of winter....

Tomorrow the lady has craft, I am going to coffee...

Hello to Sue and David...

Thursday 29th August 2019

We had a hard six months here the girl has been sick and after an operation in Albury we got good news today all good, come back for a checkup in a year... That's good news for us....

The afternoon I installed a new power meter on my new 12v power system all the parts are now in place and we have ten new LED lights in place I brought 40 on eBay at a $1ea...

As you see above the 235amp AGM battery is up and running with fuse box and power meter in place..

Close up of the power meter the battery running at 12.78 volts it is charged by a Solar Cell on the roof... with 10 LED lights on it draws 50w from the 12v source... Now I have to tell the truth I don't know what power meter saying I know "V" Volts and "W" Watts and I guess "A" Amps... Ap I don't know that one...

Up top of our Underground Home is really dry we need some rain, where is all the grass...

The odd tree on the way out as you can see and out on the flat ground to the North East only dry salt bush...

An old mine shaft next to home and the only green is a Afghan Hop every day we find more, they grow without water...

Scott have fun in Canberra, can your sister put up with you for a weekend.... HaHa...

Well not sure who but we passed 40,000 hits on the website last night, unreal number...

Have fun, if you have pictures please eMail them to me....

Have Fun this weekend...

Wednesday 28th August 2019

Still working in the new kitchen I have filled all the gap's and holes using Gap Filler over the last three days now I am onto the sanding in the kitchen... That kitchen a really big job...

The very "First Solar Power Station in the World" and they cleaned it up and open it to the public it is not used any more for power but worth a big trip to White Cliffs....

Speed is a big problem no one seem to care about the 50kph sign the roads around Smith Hill are all dirt and people are going faster and faster.. I blocked out the car, note this is a Mercedes Benz four wheel drive, maybe someone should tell them they do not have a good record in White Cliffs....

The roads are falling apart and some say you need to drive 80kph plus to cross the bump that's rubbish, apart from the dust in town someone will be killed soon... Car blocked out...

Right now 39980 hit's on the website me guess is we will cross 40,000 hits tonight....,

We need rain to fix the bad roads and we need it soon, look at the pictures it's all dead and it looks like we are going to have another very hot summer....

Scott have fun working in Canberra...

You all have fun and slow down when driving around town....

Tuesday 27th August 2019

I could not believe I was reading this today....

US President Donald Trump suggested dropping nuclear bombs into hurricanes to prevent them from hitting the US, according to a report from American news website Axios.

From the ABC website.....

To read more CLICK HERE

Will it happen today maybe it will, the Three Dots website will hit 40,000 hits..... That's a lot of reading and it is a lot of typing...

What did I do today, I fixed a broken lamp, now working all ok... I did some more work in the kitchen till I ran out of steam going up and down the ladder, used three tubes of gap filler I do some more tomorrow morning...

Late afternoon I did some more work cleaning up the storeroom, I am about half way now...

Almost Spring it start's next Sunday, a month later "Daylight Saving"...

From yesterday the wheel barrow on the hill it is very old and I was told it was found down a mine shaft...

You all have fun... Next Sunday it is Spring.

A big hello to Troy and Kylie...

Monday 26th August 2019

That was a big day I gave the car a good service and check over and all is good I could find nothing wrong... Which is how it should be that took two hours...

Next job was to sort out the workshop store room and make it easy to find things...

With no shop to buy hardware here in town you keep as much as you can at the ready, looks good but only 1/3 the room is sorted still have 2/3 to go I do a bit each day...

Taken late today looking over our caravan it is starting to dry out up on the hill... There is no wild life to be seen no kangaroo no Emu, no nothing in the way of wild life...

From Doug in Queensland the walk way is near Doug unit it be hard to have to look at this every day.. Walking along here looks like a nice way to keep fit..

From Ian and Pauline Sunset over the Wallamba River NSW... You people have all the good views that's a good picture and looks like a nice blue sky...

You all have fun... Next Sunday it is Spring.

Sunday 25th August 2019

We did Sunday Coffee at the White Cliffs Hotel today a good size group and the Hotel.... After that we went for a drive out to the White Opal mining fields just for a look, the wind was very cold but nice in the car...

Where did this come from maybe underground in a old mind shaft..

Out on the mind fields a few weeks ago they had a really big wind, this was someone home but no longer it got rolled in the wind...

Out here there are 80,000 mine shafts over a 100yr's of digging for Opal...

Some of the old mines went down 20ft they have been cleaned out of late and now being dug to 80ft deep looking for Opal...

We hope to start painting the kitchen if the weather kind to us..

I intend to clean the cars this week ...

Tomorrow back to work here on the home...

Have fun and hello to Ian and Pauline...

Saturday 24th August 2019

I am really late tonight with Three Dots so I be as quick as I can....

It's still very dry, I did put some water on the trees today, the battery in the Proton has fail altogether now so I will look on eBay...

Blue sky all day you can see how dry it is looking down the driveway it was 24c here this afternoon...

The Afghan Hops are growing wild down the hill from home they do not seem to need water...

The hall way lights now has a LDR this lights turn on when you walk out in the hallway and turn off about 2min's later the new hall way and the new kitchen are run by solar and are 12v lighting...

I could not get over the dust today the wind was blowing west to east when I setup this solar 12v fuse box.. If something goes wrong the hope is it will blow a fumes here.. When I started it was new and clean two hours later (I work slow) covered in dust...

The old broken freezer out back it does not work (but it I stand it on it's end and store my power tools) well that's a plan..

The last freezer was 190lt and never full this new one 146lt and is in place underground and work fine...

I am very late so you all have fun we will this weekend...

More on Soden's from Yesterday

Just read dots. What Bill said reminded me ..... follow-up to what I sent the other day .... Sodens Hotel was originally called Soden’s Coach-house Hotel, If I remember my history correctly. The stables were along the street side of a central courtyard & were controversially demolished when the place was rebuilt back in the ‘80s(?’'). Same time as council rebuilt the street.
Something like that!

Cheers, Doug.

From Bernie: (In Howlong)

Floodwaters that crippled North Queensland's cattle industry have turned the Channel Country further downstream into a landscape of dramatic contrasts.

While some are experiencing the best season in decades, neighbouring properties not touched by the floodwaters are still gripped by drought.

In the Diamantina National Park, it's been a blessing.

Thursday 15th and Friday16th August 2019

From Bill in Queensland (who lived in Albury)

Mum used to cook at  Sodens mainly breakfast and sometimes lunch meals. Sometimes Dad used to do breakfast instead of Mum to give Mum a break or if Mum wasn't’t up to it that day.

Mum always cooked vegetables  for each meal she never re heated left over beans or carrots etc as she said doing that takes all the flavor and goodness out  a lot of cooks there  did cook enough for break fast and lunch which made it easier for them at lunch time .

Mum was always very good in judging the right amount of veggies to use . When she was young she was a cook in a castle and cooked for a lot of people then , also having a large family and tight budget helped  . She would send me to corner shop grocery store in Ebden Street South Albury with a list of say 8 items and she would never be more than 10c out she knew the prices of what they had better than they did at times they were always amazed.

Mum did have a business degree in Holland and they did run household goods( domestic hardware kitchen ware toys etc) for over 10 years before we left Holland in 1961

Bill

....
Its an old castle in a nice area . this area is called  de Veluwe there are a lot of small farms and lots of greenery, I lived there and went to school to the first term of 4 th grade then my family migrated  to Australia. Pics taken in 2012...

How this all started we went to dinner on Tuesday night at Soden's Albury with family and Bill told me about his connection with Sodens. It is a good story... (Bill now lives in Queensland)...

From Doug in Queensland

Hi young fella! Just thinking ..... wonder if the Afghan Hops seeds blew across from Central Australia in the dust storms late last year. The timing would be about right for the plants to have mature seeds about November. Also that you told me a while back that the camels/came leers probably did not operate in the area of White Cliffs.

A few of us spent the day in Nambour on Wednesday installing the 6 metre section of track that was made last month, replacing a worn out/damaged/distorted section which was starting to give us a few problems. (no photos, I forgot to take any!).

As for the Cobb & Co picture ......did you know that they had change stations every 2 hours along their routes to swap over the horses for a fresh set, which would be waiting in the shafts for a quick change over. Those horses were worked really hard, but were well looked after. Just like a pit-stop in modern motor racing!
Look at a main roads map some time & you’ll see how the old towns are spaced apart to coincide with the need for stage coach change stations. And the number of old Coach House Hotels, stables & blacksmith shops, there are/were around the country! I know one fellow near Brisbane who still operates full time as a Wheelwright.

Cheers..... Doug.

You may well be right.... A nice flower...

Sunrises from Susan in Port Stephen....

From Bernie in Howlong....

Greetings from Howlong Rex and Carol and thanks for your update email today. I view your "3 dots" web site page daily without fail. Never a dull moment at your "construction site". I admire the skilful ingenuity and workmanship and many hours on your dugout improvements and the other daily tasks that come up unexpected. But as they say "....there is no rest for the wicked... but your Guardian Anger was sure "alongside" to find that potentially fatal cross-threaded steering ball joint nut.

Your photo of Afghan hops is interesting. I have never seen them either in White Cliffs [or elsewhere] in my many outback trips so I looked up that flower. And you are correct. The introduction of that hop plant to Australia was by Afghans about 1880. The prime use was as a "spongy packing" [when dried] for the Afghan's rough-shod 'saddles' on their camels. The plant never spread as a pest and is not a noxious weed. It is called "Wild Hops" in Australia. Oddly though, your White Cliffs hops are blooming out-of-season. Spring is the norm, so maybe there is some element of reality in this "climate change" concept. A photo attached here of a wild hop bloom near Leigh Creek in South Australia.

Love those sunny days here for a quick photo. These two last Friday of Wild Duck Creek"...a small offshoot of the Murray River near Howlong. It was a bonza redfin fishing hole in the 1970's.

They are really good pictures, nice and bright as all good pictures are...

We are in Albury tonight after a long drive from Hay NSW, White cliffs to Hay is 850km's we did 500km's the first day and 350km's today to Albury...

Across the Hay Planes today there sure a lot of nothing out there...

This is used to store grain... it is in the middle of no where 50km's from any other building... Must have had good rain out here it is so green...

The Headless Horseman from the Riverina

The days of real legends (as against the common usage of the term, today) are fast disappearing into obscurity. Why, every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to be granted "legend" status, these days, but if we look in the Oxford English Dictionary, we find a definition as a "traditional story popularly regarded as historical, myth". One such legend is that of The Headless Horseman from the Riverina area of New South Wales.

This is an extraordinary tale and one that we should not let be lost in antiquity. You see, The Headless Horseman rode the saltbush plain on his grey trotting cob, striking fear and often terror into the very hearts of the drovers moving their cattle through from the Monaro..... or so they say.

So how much is fact and how much is fiction? The late Jack Bushby, in his Deniliquin district history, Saltbush Country,  reckons that it all started back in the 1850's when it was nearly impossible to get a conviction for cattle theft against bushrangers and outlaws working the overlanding route. It seems that at about this time a drover named Doyle died in The Black Swamp.

From that time, passing drovers swore that they saw the ghost of Doyle riding around the camp at night on a cob horse and the overlanders dreaded camping in the area because they felt that sighting the apparition would spell their own demise.

Jack Bushby  suggests that "When the lands were wide and fences few, uneasy was the stockman when the sun was down and his thousand charges were scattered for miles around his campfire.... he would remember the story they were telling around Bourke that the Headless Horseman was again haunting the plains at the Black Swamp near the border and he would appear suddenly, mounted on a cob, with a cloak wrapped around him - but without a head!"
"He passed through the camp like a phantom causing the cattle to rush and the dogs to shrink away. Terror would follow with cattle, dogs, drovers all in a wild stampede!"

According to Jack's book, Charlie Lee, who drove the Hay - Deniliquin coach, saw the Headless Horseman in action. The story went that what Charlie saw was the trotting cob taking its Headless rider home to die.

In Jack's words, "Be that as it may, it adds a fitting postscript to what is probably one of the finest legends in the whole of outback Australia."

The Black Swamp is located on the Old Man Plain, a little north of Billabong Creek. Today, it is remembered by a sign on the side of the road and also a painting in the Royal Mail Pub, Booroorban, NSW.

Now there is an Horse Endurance Ride that remembers this legend. It is The Headless Horseman Ride and Drive, situated at Booroorban, New South Wales, and, as Doyle rode a trotting cob, this event has both Endurance Riding and Endurance Driving.

Sunday 4th August 2019

We left White Cliffs 8:15am and travelled 500km's to Hay tonight the Hyundai 4wd perfect all day, we travelled via the Cobb Highway. Wilcannia, Ivanhoe, Booligal, Hay we turned two corners all day...

The Cobb Highway was Australia first highway around 1903, it was used by Cobb and Co to move mail from Victoria to NSW, Queensland...

About 10yrs ago they decided to seal the old highway they have around 90km's left today we travelled that 90km's of dirt and 410km's of sealed road... On the dirt today I sat on 75kph with no problem you can do 110kph on the seal road...

This road is a bit of a icon from North to the Murray River around 840km from White Cliffs to Albury Wodonga, this as bad as the road gets in the dry (it is closed in the wet)...

Most of the day the road was good as in the picture above (note the speed read out 75kph)..

Rosewood is a outback station and it was a Cobb and Co stop...

90km's to go and this road will be full of Caravan's and trucks it will open the whole of North West NSW...

Carol took this picture in the rear view mirror, it is not a bad picture...

You only cross one hill (a very small hill) called the Manara Hills...

The top of the hill has some wild looking rocks as you can see...

This corner is owned by my late friend Carl he rolled his car here many years ago...

This is a detour road the new road is being built on the left side of this picture...

After 90km's dirt you hit the new black stuff top road and we only seen four cars all day...

This is real new, just needs the white lines...

Then you roll into Ivanhoe and the road sealed to Melbourne via Hay...

We are in Hay tonight at a motel (real nice) and parked both sides on the Hyundai are two Police Cars.. They are in Hay for some reason...

That's it time to move on in the morning...

Have fun...

The Solar Cell on the roof working well I add more lights in the kitchen when we return...

The Afghan Hop are popping up everywhere over the last week I have not seen them for years and this year they are growing all over the place..

How dry is this, we have salt bush growing but nothing else I did splash a bit of water around today...

This frame is for the Art House here in White Cliffs it goes up on a wall and used to hang art... Made of rubbish wood given to me but I get some paint and dress it up when we return...

Time to pack the car and around 8am we will hit the road, tomorrow we will head down the Cobb Highway it is 70km's of dirt road we plan to stop a night some place. The Cobb Highway is my favorite road and we are looking forward to the trip... Some friends from White Cliffs went down the Cobb today and we just rang them in Hay, the dirt good we were told they sat on 80kph on the dirt section today...

Hope to get some good pictures on the way South tomorrow, will put them on Three Dots tomorrow...

Hello to Joi, Peter and Muffy in Melbourne town....

Have fun...

Friday 2nd August 2019

What are people thinking when they fix something on a car I found in the car a steering joint that's a part of a car you do not take short cuts with, I found a nut on a steering arm for some reason the nut was cross threaded and just screwed on at a angle..

Well today we removed the steering arm fixed and added a new nut, Ron a friend in White Cliffs fixed the steering joint for me and did a top job...

It took all day to do the repair and I am happy with it...

When in Albury Wodonga I get the car checked out...

Have been cleaning up out front of the house even had the rake out today it is looking better..

With the blue sky we have been having the sunset just ok, but what it is doing is lighting up the ground turning it red at sunset looking down our driveway at sunset tonight...

The sunset again as it lights up the bush beside the driveway... Makes a good picture...

Been driving the Proton around town today as I fix the Hyundia...

The Flying Doctor just coming in for a landing over home, that not good they be here to pick up a person... Also seen a car and caravan broken down in town today, late in the day I seen the car and caravan being loaded on a flat top truck from Broken Hill someone having a bad day...
