If you are in business this is the last day of a very hard year, Covid-19 been a really big problem for business and it may go on for sometime yet...10 million people around the World have Covid-19...

We are not making any plans for our Christmas Trip this summer I am not sure but we maybe here for the summer...

At 3:30pm I took this picture in the new kitchen with no heating or cooling 21c just a nice temperature...

You may ask what this is?,... An Opal Cutting saw it is old and was given to me I fixed it up fitting new bearings and freeing up all the parts... What's it need now, new blade, motor 240v 1/2in shaft, new V-Belt and it be going... Looking forward to cutting Opal and Rock... This took most of my day today that is...

Took this picture after cleaning the headlights on the car, they had that yellow look about them. I sprayed and cleaned with WD40 spray can, gee that's great stuff they came up like new...

I just seen in this picture that the car needs a wheel alignment note the wear on the inside of the right tyre. I always have trouble with wheel alignment on cars around here the tyres here have done 21,000 km's they are ATV tyres...

Broken Hill tomorrow, trip in and out on the same day 600 km's return I take some pictures for Three Dots...

You all have fun next month July...

Saturday 27th June 2020

Worked all day on the outside of the new kitchen, I would call today water proofing I been going around the out side of the kitchen and blocking any holes or cracks but will not know if I did a good job till it rains...

My spot to take a picture I stand up here on top of the bank and take picture's of the sunset and a lot of other pictures. In my spare time I like to lay cement up here maybe even a rail and add a seat. It is a long way down over the bank as you can see here around 45ft to the bottom...

I been ask about television in White Cliffs do we get TV, we sure do it is called VAST tv ...

Note there is no TV in White Cliffs unless you have a VAST box... So bring your video collection...

Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) is a satellite-delivered service that provides commercial and national (ABC and SBS) broadcasting services. It is funded by the Australian Government to provide access to a suite of metropolitan-equivalent broadcasting services to people in remote areas and to viewers in terrestrial digital television 'black spots', who would not otherwise be able to receive digital television services.

There are around 300 ch on Vast tv but 200 ch are the same you can watch say Home and Away at 7pm from Sydney and then watch the same Home and Away in South Australia 30mins later and again on West Australia tv (7pm WA time) that is 9pm our time... You can also watch it in NT and Qld tv... (but they all have ad's)

Taken yesterday from Joe's Opal Shop looking South towards home... That is Smiths Hill...

Tomorrow a day off work and out for coffee in the afternoon... Group of us getting together...

You all have fun...

Wednesday 24th June 2020

From Bernie in Howlong...

Last week you threw up the idea of some external decoration out the front of the dugout. Rocks, rocks, rocks. You got 100's...all free and ready for the picking. Cacti are lovely. easy to grow needing minimum water. A variety of 20 different cuttings can be bought for $30. That pink "pigface" cactus creeper can cover large areas quickly. Thrives on minimal water. The good thing about cactus is that [I think] not many stray animals will eat them,,,especially prickly cacti. Have you thought perhaps just a few treated pine posts and some wire mesh trellis to have shady bower over the front entry door. This could be an ivy or ornamental grape which also grows quickly with little water need

The good thing about cactus is that people who grow this in their own garden often give away for free lots of cuttings

.....

I forgot to mention in my prior email that old truck tyres make a great bedding base for a rockery. You can hide the rubber from view covered with nice white opal dirt. Tyres can be filled with a mix of good soil and the tyres also help maintain moisture. You mentioned a few weeks ago you were just going to drain laundry water onto the landing. You would be better off using this for plants. You could make a simple filter for soapy water from a 44 gallon drum or similar. You just use sand inside

Thanks Bernie I really like the walkway...

From Ian and Pauline in Yass NSW

Wow the river sure got up today the walkway across the river be a bit of a risk...

Ian you will need to take the long way around for a few day on your walks....

Sunday 21st June 2020

Today is the shortest day of the year June 21, 2020 - It's the day when we see the sun for the shortest time and for every day that follows we get a few more seconds of daylight. Some say it is the start of winter ...

Carol took this a nice sunset picture...

Taken in very low light looking to the East away from the sunset, note the pink sky...

From the new kitchen window looking over town and towards Queensland ...

Work is at a stand-still on the linen press in the hallway till my are gets a bit better...

After you walk out of the kitchen you are in the hallway the linen press is on the left the underground section of the house on the right. The door you see on the right is the hot water service... The window is a fixed window and lets the light in..

What you see when you look out the small window a big earth bank the small door is no longer used it was used for a LP gas bottle ...

Coffee this afternoon at Tony and Belinda place...

You all have fun...

Saturday 20th June 2020

That sore arm stopped me working today on the house so I pulled out a computer that Scott gave me a Christmas time when we were in Wangaratta he setup Windows ten on it and I sat here all day setting it up it is a far better computer than what I was using...

White Cliffs:

Someone tossed some rubbish in the tip and set it a light, I went to the tip and dropped off some rubbish...

You wonder why people set camp at the local cemetery it happing more and more... Guess it is free...

Turley Hill at the South end a few new homes being setup...

Same Hill "Turleys" a few of the older underground homes... They need to buy some paint...

Yesterday I had trouble with two pictures they were right, then sideways, then upside down so today I removed then and replaced them with new pictures ....

Have fun a slow day....

Friday 19th June 2020

Thursday 18th June 2020

I had a day off working inside the kitchen, laundry the first day off in three weeks went to the doctor for my diabetes test and all good better than ever they said, "it's call hard work..."

People all over town are putting up Australian Flags I seen maybe a dozen in town, this is a private home..

Another thing back in fashion rock are this one a lot of work again at a private home...

The White Cliffs Caravan Park is full in fact it is over full...

This was taken today in White Cliffs from the road outside the park...

What I did this afternoon worked on the landing to park a caravan or motor home. Mover the rain gauge and it has never had water in it.. moved the big pots so as to make more room on the landing...

I almost given up trying to grow in White Cliffs, so I am working on the rock garden as I call it... New home for the rain gauge, maybe one day it will see water, best we have had is 1mm of red dust hahaha...

New home for the pots at the top of the drive way the left one has a bush growing so I leave it there ...

A big day the caravan park is full, the flying doctor came to town about 40 cars at the airport to see the flying doctor plane. Dick said his Opal shop was doing well which is good to see..

You all have fun...

Wednesday 17th June 2020

First job was pump up the tyres on the caravan that was flatter than flat I think when we decide to travel into Broken Hill I remove it from the caravan and have it repaired in town...

The laundry was my big job for today I cut the tiles for the laundry (they are in place but not stuck down yet) I do not have a big tile cutter so I cut the tiles with a 4" angle grinder that I own.. A small job for a tiller but a big job for one who know little about tile.. I fix them in place end of the week...

The Linen press is now well under way next to the laundry the timber frame is in place.. And I have some tiles for that floor as well...

It was a big day work Laundry and Linen Press...

Tomorrow I go for a drive and get some pictures for Three Dots have to see the doctor about diabetes test that I need to have... Just the normal tests nothing special...

You all have fun this week it has been a fast week working in White Cliffs we have done a lot of work...

Tuesday 16th June 2020

Wow what a great day blue sky all day, again around 21c but it was cold over night 5c (I know if you live in Canberra that's a hot night...

Monday 15th June 2020

Ian & Pauline in Yass New South Wales:

Rex,

Went for a drive down to Lake Burrunjack for a picnic. Got to the gate and turned around and went back to Yass.

Had 20+ mm last night the weir was running. Pretty brown, must have rained mud.

Thanks guys pity the gates were locked that's not good...

White Cliffs:

Blue sky all day today Monday and around 21c out side I worked all day in the laundry look to install hot water using what copper pipe we have I had five smaller copper that I soldered into one long length around 5m long 15ft in the old talk.. I am not happy with what the thin solder I used but we will see how it works out.

On top of home today I am looking to build a water channel to divert rain water if it ever rains...

Some of the trees around the area are starting to green but there are a lot of weeds in the area ...

We need to divert water away from the Underground Home think I stack up some rocks about 150mm 6" high just to divert the rain water up top of home..

Just one small are and we have 1000s of rocks to pick from and add some cement...

You all have fun...

Sunday 14th June 2020

I need copper pipe for the hot water in the new laundry so this morning I went on a copper pipe hunt and found about 20ft around home all 1/2in in the old size.. I need to join the pipe up but have what we need (I think) ...

This afternoon we went out for coffee here in town a good afternoon for a chat...

After coffee we went for a drive around town Carol with the camera...

An old tinny that may have seen better days outside a house on Smith's Hill...

Here a real Australian, flying the flag on the side of there car...

Council water pond yes this is where the council get their water from for road works around town ...

Carol picture a duck on the council pond today ( it is a good picture) ...

Driving around the back of Turley's Hill, looking towards East and Bourke out that flat land...

South East from Turley's Hill showing the new road to the East of town (the white drums are at the local tip).

And last for today Carol taking a picture in the car rear-view mirror, no bad as it turned out...

We had a good weekend in town, weather really good today, blue sky all day around 20c outside...

You all have fun, we hope to...

Saturday 13th June 2020

After a cold night outside it did look like rain all day but so far nothing happen maybe tonight it will not take much rain to fill the rain water tank, we have used about 100 lts after the last rain...

I fitted a new handle to the outside of the front door today it will make it easy to open and close... The rest of the day I worked in the new laundry just outside the new kitchen... sorting out the water system not easy in White Cliffs just hard to find the right fitting that we need...

Still work in progress but we are doing all ok..

Note the water tap (cold wash) that will feed the washing machine, the tub will sit this end on the back wall... The wooden block on the wall us where we mount the tap...

No blue sky today just 100% cloud cover all day.. we got to 17c in the kitchen ...

This bird was facing North into the 35 kph wind just sitting there ...

Not a good day to zoom (lack of light) the same bird as above... I think it is a hawk but that may not be so...

Well that's Saturday this weekend ....

You all have fun this weekend...

Friday 12th June 2020

Well the weekend is here and we have no plan's at this stage so looks like a quit weekend I keep working on the house, today was taken up installing a tap in laundry it took three hours to find the right fittings then the new tap has a drip but I must say the tap was new three years ago but it is still unused... Put a bucket under the drip and will look at again tomorrow...

Went for a drive to the tip late today and took the pictures below of the creek, it is dry once again...

As I said the creek is dry...

They tell me some Opal has been pulled out of the creek over the years...

Same creek and still dry about 1km up-stream ... We need some rain again...

Our water tank still doing well with about 900lt's in the tank tonight...

From Bernie in Howlong

Rexie: You asked for some advice on killing weeds so here is some simplified information. Well, it's a long story but killing weeds can be somewhat intricate. Firstly, It helps if one understands how herbicides kill weeds. For tall, green, common grassy weeds, a herbicide sprayed directly on the leaves is absorbed as a systemic, meaning that it goes throughout the plant's foliar [leaf] structure. The herbicide disrupts the plants ability to make amino acids which upsets the process of making chlorophyll and essential sugars the plant thrives on. Without food, the plant starves.... as seen in yellowing and wilted leaves. Flat, broadleaf weeds can be controlled similarly [with herbicide intake via leaves] but these "succulent" plants have a dense and intricate root system, which within, hold the moisture that supplies the "life juices" to the broad leaves. In this instance you need a herbicide that targets the roots. This particular herbicide...when taken in by roots... in essence causes "arthritis" in the root system where roots cannot form properly. In the end, these crippled roots just cannot spread out into the soil to find nutrients. I'm visualising the main weed you are looking at eradicating Rex is "3 Cornered Jack or Devils Thorn". This is readily controlled with glyphosate.* RoundUp is just another brand name for glyphosate...but 3 times the price because it is a household word. Glyphosate [RoundUp or similar] will kill the leafy growth of Devil's Thorn in its early growing stage. Once the thorn seed hardens, only digging out, burning the bush with flamethrower, or a high concentration of a woody herbicide spray like GRAZON will kill seeds. Grazon is not cheap! Despite all the high tech herbicides sold for farm and home garden, simple diesel fuel spray is as near effective. It's cheap by the gallon. Just don't go smoking while you are spraying Rex!

* glyphosate. What is it? Simple. It is a formulated type of SALT. Salt is a Chlorine. Salt kills all weeds. Powdered...or liquid swimming pool chlorine is as good a weed killer you can get. A 25 Kg bag of Pool chlorine-salt crystals...to dilute in water...will kill nearly all your weeds over an acre for about $30 the 25 kg chlorine bag. A 1 litre bottle of White King Bleach full strength 4.5 % Hypochlorite cost $5. If you "spot spray" prior to rain within 24 hours, a small spray will see weed die off promptly. For milky thistles in small spots in my yard Rex, I give the weed a squirt from an aerosol engine DEGREASER. $2 a can kills 100 thistle weeds...no need bending down. I just shoot from the hip like Clint Eastwood.

The second photo here is a glyphosate Weed Kill" $15 the litre bottle gut it's only 100 grams per litre of active glyphosate. The "pink dyed RoundUp" stuff you see Councils using is 750 gram per litre. The strongest RoundUp made.

So there's the story in a nutshell . Enjoy the read. I worked 5 years with a glyphosate manufacturing chem mob so I think I can confirm my commentary.

Sent from my HP Chromebook Laptop. We do not text while driving but sip Port from the comfort of our computer desk

Bernie Thanks, good reading for everyone... I keep this email... RexD

Cold at night in White Cliffs but beautiful days around 20c really nice...

You all have fun this weekend...

Thursday 11th June 2020...

Bit of a mix today first job was to finish the driveway down the hill it looks good, and nice to drive on, far better than it was four weeks ago.

Where I am building a site for caravan or motor home (this is not for our van but visitors) there was two stumps quite small but two big to dig out so I built two small fires to burn the stump's out...

The first stump, I built a fire on top of the stump (will check it out tomorrow)..

The second stump on fire and I hope when I look tomorrow it be burnt out...

Out of the kitchen I started work on the new laundry .. it will have the tub and washing machine I worked on the room all afternoon and plan to do as much as I can over the next week I may need to buy some parts when in Broken Hill next time...

Not a bad afternoon work it sure look good after tomorrow...

It was a really big day for us we did a lot, question for all of you is "Roundup Weed Killer" still on the market, I do not think so.. Zero kills the garden weeds but not good on the woody weeds in the yard... What the best weed killer for the weed in the yard. Need a good weed killer... please eMail if you can help rexdun@outlook.com

You all have fun, had a hard day it was good...

Wednesday 10th June 2020...

Cannot say I had a great day the power lead I was using was cutting in and out... On one end a plug with a lot of rust so after two hours looking for new one I fixed it ....

My next job is the new laundry which is 1/2 built already the plan was to start it today but gave up and worked on the drive way maybe one or two days there and the driveway be a 100% I also start in the laundry tomorrow..

The driveway looking a lot better getting up it before was like a car rally now it is a easy drive up...

Sunset was ok and I did try a close up of the sun we had a very orange sky at sunset...

From Bernie and ABC...

Read about White Cliffs water the new water filter that never happen Click Here

Also finished off the plan (CAD Drawing) for the White Cliffs Sporting Club.. They are adding a new cool-room to the club and I did a drawing for the club to give council in Wilcannia... Job Done...

Tomorrow another day (better one I hope) and I get some work done,,,

You all have fun....

Tuesday 9th June 2020...

Mixed day here in White Cliffs went out to the Opal fields looking for Opal and found nothing at all, Next job was clean up the landing well I got some of it done, then fixed a round table that got bent somehow..

Out on the Opal fields today but we had no luck...

We did try a number of spots but nothing to be seen...

Lot of big gear here a lot of money you would need to fine Opal ....

I am building a site for a caravan or motor home to camp it is close to water or power and a great view you can fit a 26ft caravan on the site have a bit more work to go just to get it level. You are looking North to Queensland a million dollar view...

The table some how got bent and was on a tilt, I been told I did it... Well I did fix it, now all in line good for an outside coffee we had one there late today...

From Bernie Kokot in Howlong

Ageing gracefully, Tony now and then.  There's some 40 years plus between the two photos.

Thanks all you have fun this week ...

Monday 8th June 2020...

We almost had the day off, I was telling Tony about making a place to park the caravan yesterday but I had a big mound of dirt in the way to big for this old man to move... Tony turned up today with his bob cat and in 5mim's did what would have taken me a week to move, maybe longer...

I am sure he got a Tonka Truck for his first birthday he sure got some big toys in his yard...

Over the bank it went but he made it look so easy..

.

The caravan is in it's new home, we planned that a while back but the big mound of dirt stopped us.. The dirt came from building the kitchen...

That is a good job out of the way at last thanks Tony thanks a million...

We had the rest of the day off.... You all have fun...

Sunday 7th June 2020

Up early and finish the clean up the house, it has never look better all clean and polish today we had the Covid19 max of five people and our first coffee day...

From left to right Carol, nurse Belinda, Tony and Nurse Marg and Rex behind the camera. We had Tea and coffee that lasted three hours, really good...

Tony and Nurse Marg heap of food for a great afternoon tea...

Belinda and Tony we all had a really good time...

The new kitchen the first coat of paint is on... It will only look better...

Here a picture you have not seen before, our bedroom 25ft below the ground it is 23 to 24c all year round the steps lead up to the lounge room where the television is... when you turn the lights off here at night you cannot see your hand on the end of your noise.. It is so quite you can hear your heart beat, you really can, at night we turn the fan on to move air and make noise to sleep by... The fan runs every night summer and winter just to make a noise...

Tomorrow it is time to have a day off work and just sit around, I go buy a paper but it be a week old, that's true the weekend paper will go on sale around Thursday, that's White Cliffs...

I know it is all about that room but it took five years working sit months a year for one person when I started I had a dream of building it in six month, how wrong can one be... Hahaha...

After yesterday day it was good to have power all day here at home...

You all have fun this long weekend we sure did today...

Saturday 6th June 2020

Really late around 2:30pm the power went off at home and power people sent a crew from Broken Hill to do a reset in the power box on the hill behind home, it took about 5 min's for the crew to fix the problem at 8pm tonight ... So you all have fun and tomorrow is another day...

Friday 5th June 2020 (Pauline Birthday, she 21 again I am told.)

Another week over and and we are into winter, but in White Cliffs today it was a great day blue sky and around 21c ...

Job done it is built at last and a really big clean day in the kitchen tomorrow and it will be open for coffee on Sunday...

The lights are hanging down to let the paint dry overnight. The secret door you see will be turned into a book case and then you will not see the door... All lighting in the New Kitchen is Solar 12 volt .... Really pleased with the roof that the first time I have put up a ceiling...

In May I show you this picture of the saw tooth roof in the kitchen...

Same roof today I have some timber trim ready to go up when the paint dry's just to finish it off...

Went down to the shop to check the mail and took this picture of home on the way home...

So tomorrow it is clean you day for us...

You all have fun we will this weekend...

Thursday 4th June 2020 (Happy Birthday Troy)

Have a read:

The opal-mining town of White Cliffs, in the state's far west, last year came within weeks of needing to truck water more than 200 kilometers from Broken Hill.

A multi-million-dollar State Government project to upgrade the town's water supply was announced in 2016.

It included a plan to replace the network of leaking pipes that supplied water to about 200 properties, and upgrades to the main storage reservoir and water-treatment plant.

From Bernie in Howlong:

Is this the result of nature... or man's influence?  Well ,yes ... there has been some good rain in White Cliffs. But  Rex says it's his sweat and tears expended during renovations to the Smiths Hill dugout home that have trickled along the driveway and kept that vegetation alive.

Thanks Bernie, and your right...

You all have fun tomorrow it is Friday....

Wednesday 3rd June 2020

Big sleep last night after the trip to Broken Hill and back I did intend to have an easy day but that never happen I did a lot of small job today...

Found this picture today that Carol took on the way from Broken Hill just like it...

While at the Hardware Shop I seen a rain gauge on for $14 that sounded ok to me so Rex got himself a gift... But let me tell you we had 1mm of dust today Um mm.

I been told that's a pine post 20yr's and it will fall over... I am 71yrs old next month so I hope I am around to see it fall.. Yes it is level right to the mm...

What else did I do today Carol locked the caravan on the inside then closed the door, fine but the key would not open the door from the outside.. Had to break into the caravan the hard way, now I have a new job to add to my list fix the caravan door...

All the rain over the last month or two have washed away the driveway up the hill to home... Dick a local opal miner is mining around 60ft deep and sends his rocks to the top and into his tip-truck he in now dropping it in our driveway and I do the rest with a rake... More rock to come this week... I say a big thank-you Dick ...

Tomorrow I be doing a big cleanup in the new kitchen I feel by Saturday I be able to say "Job Done" that has been a big job...

You all have a fun day tomorrow...

Tuesday 2nd June 2020

That was a really big day up at 6am and on the road to Broken Hill by 6:45am a 300km trip and first stop was the car rego and I am happy to say 100% pass for this year... I need to put in a can of oil stop leak a very sloe\slow drip maybe one drip a day...

Carol was on the camera I pulled over to check the load...

Have a load on the trailer coming back, yes I am back building but not the kitchen this time...

You drive 200kms turn one corner near Wilcannia to the left coming home then a 100km's to home (one corner in 300kms)

This is the road from Wilcannia to White Cliffs, note the white flowers...

The road Broken Hill to White Cliffs... Seen a few trucks not many and maybe six caravans today...

That life today, car rego, Cole's, Woolworth's, Home Hardware then on the road home... A slack day tomorrow...

It is after 7pm so you all have fun...

Monday 1st June 2020

Gee I had a busy day, last night I made a list of what I need to do and I never made the end of the list today just to big a list to get it all done. Tomorrow we go to Broken Hill and get the car rego done, well that is the big plan we planning on going in and back home on the same day 600km round trip...

First job was empty the trailer it was full to over flowing and it took around 30min's to empty at the tip then back home I checked the oil, water and everything else that needed checking... I even cleaned the windscreen for this trip...

Afghan hop are popping up all over the place I do hope we see a wild flower year this year, it is looking good...

Don't know what you call this plant but they are starting to come up all around home...

Maybe this will the year where the outback turns in a big garden...

Hope to get some good pictures on the way to Broken Hill and return...
